Texas fought for its independence from Mexico and became a republic. One of the most famous battles of the Texas Revolution was fought at the Alamo. For 13 days, 189 patriots held their own against 4,000 Mexican soldiers. Eventually the Mexicans killed everyone there except for a few women, children, and slaves. Texans got their revenge when a group of volunteers led by General Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto. As they charged, the volunteers shouted, "Remember the Alamo!"
